The Sacraments of Healing
The Sacrament of Anointing of the Sick/Extreme Unction

In this sacrament God's grace and comfort is given to those seriously ill or suffering because of their old age.
Those who receive the sacrament, it:
  • renews their trust and faith in God
  • unites them to Christ and to his suffering
  • prepares them, when necessary, for death and the hope of life forever with God
The Sacrament of Anointing of the sick is often celebrated outside of mass so it usually starts with the Liturgy of the Word and is followed by Communion.  As those who are very sick approach the hour of death they are given the Body of Christ in the Eucharist  as viaticum, or "food for the journey."

"The special grace of the sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick has as its effects: the uniting of the sick person to the passion of Christ, for his own good and that of the whole Church; the strengthening, peace, and courage to endure in a Christian manner the sufferings of illness or old age; the forgiveness of sins, if the sick person was not able to obtain it through the sacrament of penance; the restoration of health, if it is conducive to the salvation of his soul; the preparation for passing over to eternal life" (CCC 1532).
